Towards the end of 2012, Patrick took an inspirational trip to Japan with his girlfriend. He immediately started experimenting with various concepts inspired by his trip.
At the start of 2013, Betaworks ran a program called Hackers in Residence. Paul led the program and Patrick was one of 8 participant “hackers". Still motived from his trip, Patrick proposed he build a game inspired by art from around the world. They launched Patrick's game three months later and were overwhelmed with interest, setting up the company as Playdots, Inc. ("Dots") shortly thereafter. After several months experimenting with various monetization strategies, from paid in-game features to native advertising partnerships, the team concluded a new game should be made to achieve the next level of commercial success.
Throughout 2014, the company focused on recruiting exceptional talent from the best startups and games studios across the country. The first full-time employee hired at Dots, David Hohusen, went on to design the company's second game, Two Dots, which launched in the summer of 2014. Supported by a data-centric marketing team, Two Dots achieved the #1 rank in 71 Countries within the first 24 hours of it's launch, making it the most-downloaded game for the entire month and one of the most popular games of 2014.
Following the success of Two Dots, the company received $10M of investment from Tencent, Greycroft, Northzone and a number of strategic gaming industry executives to scale the studio. The company is currently focused on expanding the Dots franchise with Two Dots, Two Dots: 冒险之旅 (a unique game for the Chinese market, based on Two Dots) and an upcoming third title currently under development.
As the Two Dots business continues to attract new players, revenues are at an all-time high. After a year of growth, the team is now 50 people split across multiple titles, including one that will launch in 2017. In July, the company launched Dots & Co, which quickly became a "Top 5" game in over 100 countries. With the launch of Dots & Co, the studio achieved 3-time back-to-back global hits.
